CBK Deadline for Exchange of the 5th Issue Banknotes

The Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) announces the deadline for exchanging banknotes of the fifth issue as Friday 18 April 2025. Therefore, the CBK urges those holding banknotes of the outdated fifth issue to visit its Banking Hall to present the necessary documentation to exchange them during official working hours from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m (from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm during the month of Ramadan). Any exchange request after the said date will be disregarded.

This decision is based on the provisions of Article 10 of the Law No. 32 of 1968 concerning Currency, the Central Bank of Kuwait and Regulation of Banking and its amendments related to withdrawing banknotes from circulation, and Resolution No. (37/405/2015) that was published in the Official Gazette “Al-Kuwait Al-Youm” on 19 April 2015 with respect to withdrawing all denominations of the fifth issue banknotes from circulation. As stated in Article 3 of the said Resolution, “The fifth issue of Kuwaiti banknotes has lost its status as a legal tender upon the lapse of the grace period specified under Article (1) hereof and as such transactions in these notes will no longer be allowed. However, holders of the fifth issue banknotes shall still be able to exchange them only at CBK Banking Hall, within an extended period of 10 years from the effective date of the Resolution. No such exchange shall be allowed after 18 April 2025.”

While stressing keenness to provide the best banking services to the public and to ensure efficiency of financial operations, CBK urges all holders of KWD banknotes of the fifth issue to visit its Banking Hall before the lapse of the aforesaid deadline to exchange them.
